Alien Trilogy The Game by Acclaim
November 14, 2007While no one can hear you scream in space, Acclaim must have heard me howling in anguish over this Doom wanna-be piece of schlock.
The graphics in Alien Trilogy lag way behind the competition of 3D-shooters at it’s time, looking more like a Doom clone (and a poor one at that) than the 16-bit color wonder-game it’s supposed to be. Everything is bit-mapped and there are way too few poses for each dark and blocky critter, which creates the feeling that they are floating toward you rather than moving naturally.
The levels are 2D, without so much as a hint of a third dimension. Going up and down stairs and opening doors are the highlights. Of course, in the future nobody pays their light bill so backgrounds range from dark to darker.
who put gum on my trigger?
Combat is a panic-stricken affair. Players must aim at the creatures, back up (banging into things constantly), and press the fire button each time they want to shoot–holding down fire does nothing, and there is no turbo or repeat key.
At this point, I was still enjoying myself. For all its primitive feel, Trilogy’s sounds were great and just because it’s Aliens, I wanted to root for this game. But then I was hit with a nasty surprise as I looked through the documentation (which is short, but complete–how many things need to be said about a shooter?). I was looking for the save game feature, but was shocked to learn that you can only save between missions. a dog that couldn’t bark
Girding my loins, I continued play and found the second feature that drops Trilogy from a 2X-rated Doom clone to a 1X runaway dog: the game crashes within levels. It’s bad enough
to have to replay a level because you screwed up (and if you don’t play well, you must repeat levels). But when a game doesn’t provide a save feature and it crashes repeatedly, I just want to strangle the person who’s responsible.
Boring 2D levels with gameplay that only requires shooting this thing, shooting that thing, and flipping a switch are not my idea of an original or compelling gaming experience. Add the crashes and lack of in-level saves, and I start hurling. My advice: save the money you would have spent on this game, buy the Aliens soundtrack, and make your own game–it couldn’t be any worse.

-Type in "ifyouthinkyouarehardenough" to get all the weapons and unlimited ammo.
-Type in "comeandhaveago" to get all the weapons.
-Type in "nadiapopovXX" to warp levels (where XX is between level 01 and level 34).
